Today was our first proper day back at school. We got a rundown of what we are expected to do this year, and quite frankly, it is a little overwhelming. We have to start and complete a full scale drama production in 3 months, all while working on this project, all while studying for matric, which we will start midyear. Since I am a director of the Noises Off production with Ruby Eastwood, it will be a lot more work on our part in terms of the play, which will mean limited time on project in the first few months. Damn.
We got our project forms, where we had to write up a proposal, and since I knew exactly what I was doing, I whizzed through it, all the way until I had to give the name and contact details of my proposed mentor. I had no idea who to contact, or who to ask for a contact. This is my first step: finding a mentor. I already knew that I wanted Nick Shaw as an internal mentor, since he has a technical mind and can help me if I get stuck.
I got home and started looking up agencies in South Africa that specialized in HAB to see if I could get some contacts. Okay, in actual fact I went home and watched YouTube videos and completely forgot about the project. (But in my mind I did research).
While I was procrastinating, my mom spoke to one of her friends (Alex Larkin) about the project and later that day her friend called me to say that she knew someone at the South African Weather Service, based at Cape Town International, Rian Smit. She said I should give him a call to see if he can help me or if he knows of anyone who can.
I will give him a call tomorrow. This is a fantastic start.
